This is what happens on a redhat 6.2 box..running sshd.  I connect with a windows client ,(SecureCRT) and this is what i get when i tail the /var/log/messages :

Oct 17 00:39:27 thorzine sshd[1142]: log: Could not reverse map address xxx.xxx.xxx.
Oct 17 00:39:29 thorzine PAM_pwdb[1142]: authentication failure; (uid=0) -> username for ssh service
Oct 17 00:39:34 thorzine PAM_pwdb[1142]: (ssh) session opened for user username by (uid=0)
Oct 17 00:39:34 thorzine sshd[1142]: log: Password authentication for username accepted.
Oct 17 00:40:05 thorzine PAM_pwdb[1170]: (su) session opened for user root by username(uid=500)

Yet, this is the weird part.  It takes a few mins to connect.....then it connects......asks for passphrase, then im in, and the connection is a sucess.  What is it doing?
