I have installed SSH2 (2.4.0) on two linux systems that are virtually identical. On one, sshd2 launched just fine. On the other (metric.cofc.edu) I get the following: jim@metric:~ > /usr/local/sbin/sshd2 sshd2: SSH Secure Shell 2.4.0 (non-commercial version) on i586-pc-linux-gnu FATAL: ssh_privkey_read from /home/jim/.ssh2/hostkey failed. I cannot see why this is happening and there is no clue for me here as to why it failed. My .ssh2 directory on metric.cofc.edu looks like this: jim@metric:~ > ll /home/jim/.ssh2 total 68 -rw-r--r-- 1 jim users 225 Feb 6 15:39 authorization drwx------ 2 jim users 4096 Feb 6 15:41 hostkeys -rw------- 1 jim users 871 Feb 6 15:39 id_dsa_1024_a -rw-r--r-- 1 jim users 732 Feb 6 15:39 id_dsa_1024_a.pub -rw-r--r-- 1 jim users 20 Feb 6 15:39 identification -rw-r--r-- 1 jim users 732 Feb 6 15:39 jim-metric.pub -rw------- 1 jim users 512 Feb 9 12:17 random_seed -rw-r--r-- 1 jim users 1736 Feb 6 14:24 ssh2_config -rw-r--r-- 1 jim users 2582 Feb 6 14:24 sshd2_config and hostkeys contains: -rw------- 1 jim users 751 Feb 6 15:40 key_22_24.214.24.78.pub -rw------- 1 jim users 755 Feb 6 15:41 key_22_weather.cofc.edu.pub which makes me think that it is not a permissions problem I'm having. By comparison, on the system that works (24.214.24.78), I have in .ssh2: -rw-r--r-- 1 jim users 172 Feb 3 20:05 authorization drwx------ 2 jim users 1024 Jan 19 20:55 hostkeys -rw------- 1 jim users 871 Feb 3 19:58 id_dsa_1024_a -rw-r--r-- 1 jim users 732 Feb 3 19:58 id_dsa_1024_a.pub -rw-r--r-- 1 jim users 20 Feb 3 19:58 identification -rw-r--r-- 1 jim users 732 Feb 6 15:41 jim-metric.pub -rw------- 1 jim users 512 Feb 4 15:32 random_seed -rw-r--r-- 1 jim users 1736 Feb 4 15:19 ssh2_config -rw-r--r-- 1 jim users 2582 Feb 4 15:19 sshd2_config and in hostkeys: -rw------- 1 jim users 755 Jan 19 20:55 key_22_weather.cofc.edu.pub The other computer shown, weather.cofc.edu, is a different computer and not one of the above. The sshd2_config files are identical on the two machines. Also, my warn log and message log contain only: : FATAL ERROR: ssh_privkey_read from /home/jim/.ssh2/hostkey failed. Any suggestions on where to look or what to try? What causes a "hostkey failed" comment? Jim -- James R.
