there's no such thing as an ASCII sftp transfer. it's all binary.
encrypted, remember? i doubt that there's a translation problem. i'll bet
that your logger isn't doing proper carriagereturn/linefeeds in the log
file.

most ftp servers will do xlataion for you. try downloading it as binary
using regular FTP and see what it looks like.
