ssh-agent and ssh-add with cde

I want to get ssh-agent started, and prompted 1 time to ssh-add the passphrase.  Running openssh 2.9p1 on Solaris 2.7 (cde 1.3). I have exhausted experimenting with numerous solutions found searching the net.  The closest I've come is getting the agent started but every shell wants the passphrase... instead of a 1-time prompt to satisfy entire session.
