(Smiling...) I did almost exactly the same things like you and I got the
same results.

Finally I searched the module apache_ssl.c where the error message is
produced and commented it out. It works...but this is not a final
solution. ;-)

IMHO the #DEFINE CACHE_SESSIONS is not handled consequently through
out the source.
