Most versions of SSLeay (I have not changed anything in the crypto/pem
directory for years :-) generate
BEGIN CERTIFICATE
BEGIN CERTIFICATE REQUEST
BEGIN X509 CRL
but will also accept
X509 CERTIFICATE
NEW CERTIFICATE REQUEST
