The phosphor adds hardness to the alloy.  The phos-bronze that I get is 
CA-544 with this comp.:  88% Copper, 3.5-4.5% lead, 3.5-4.5 tin, 1.5-4.5% 
zinc,0.10% iron,0.01-0.50 phosphorous.
