Steve, If it has an acrid, almost sour smell you may have been given hypoid gear oil. Often this looks black or greenish-black like steam oil but it smells unmistakeably awful because of the high sulphur content. This is not good for locos. Steam oil should have an mildly sweet odor. Cheers, Harry
