My 2-8-0 has a 3/32" OD pipe, mainly for flexibility between engine and tender. ID of this would likely be about 1/16" I suppose. On the discharge side of the pump it could be smaller if it was important. Pump suction is a bit more important not to get too small. Depends also on pump size and pump speed of course, since velocity is what governs.
