42" gauge was often called "Cape Gauge" because of its extensive 
use in South Africa, and later in other British-controlled countries in 
Africa.  (I guess Australia qualifies, too, except for not being in Africa.)

You may remember Ralph Holden's column in Garden Railways.  It 
started with a feature article in Jan. 1993.  His regular column started 
in December of that year and continued through 1998.  

Coincidentally, the Jan '93 issue also featured an article on building a 
Beyer Garratt from two Big Haulers, though I don't think they were 
1:24 scale.
