meantime on 2 boxes I found with addition of -B -j 1 I can repeat eg:
cd /usr/src/
make -B -j 1 all
make -B -j 1 install
make -B -j 1 all
make -B -j 1 install
make -B -j 1 all
make -B -j 1 install
