If I might recommend something here, you should have a look at "Project Sikuli" 
(http://www.sikuli.org).

 

We are currently planning to use it for our internal GUI tests as well.

STAF itself does not provide a way to interact with a user (other than via a 
stdin file provided when first starting a process).  There are many other tools 
available specifically for automating UI testing.  You can use STAF in 
conjunction with a UI tool (e.g. use a PROCESS START request to run a UI test 
on a remote machine).
