FWIW, I can't quite relate to the relevance the traffic consideration seems to have for others. Straightforward and reliable message delivery and synchronization mechanisms are probably widely viewed as fundamental features of messaging protocols, these days. Adding a small percentage of traffic to implement these features seems totally appropriate to me, esp. as such traffic is transmitted while radios are active anyway. If we can achieve the same results without creating traffic, that's obviously preferrable. But if there's downsides to such approaches, it becomes a trade-off, so I wouldn't a priori rule out any solution that creates additional traffic.
