I'm afraid this might still be a little ambiguous. "Matches of spans between two styling directives MUST contain some text between the two styling directives, otherwise neither directive is valid." So where does this leave "**text*" as an example? If 'neither directive is valid' does that mean the second asterisk wouldn't be a valid open simply because it wasn't a valid close when paired with the first?
Should the implication be that "neither directive is valid when considering this sequence as a span," while still allowing the possibility of the second being an open for another span?
