Wrong. Starmaxes run the Mac OS all the way up to 9.1. I am currently
running 8.6 on my 3000/180 as I type this and I have tested 9.1 on this
machine as well. Whoever told you that 7.6 was all you could run had no
idea what they were talking about. Let me also add that my Starmax talks
very nicely to my MacPlus, Mac II, and my son's iMac (snow), all are
networked together via Localtalk/Appletalk. Eventually I will upgrade this
to an Ethernet network for greater speed.
Step 1 is to go out and get at least 8.6 and if possible 9.1, but only if
you have 64MB or more of RAM. 9.1 is much more RAM hungry than 8.6. Either
run fine and are more stable than 7.6.
Step 2 comes in two flavors. A) Either get an Ethernet card & Ethernet hub
for the Starmax or B) an Assante Ethernet->Appletalk converter for the G4.
A is faster, but B is cheaper. If you do graphics with big files, then A is
the way to go.
