The way I do it is that I have an old computer, mine is an old mac, but it
could just as easy be an old PC, that runs NetBSD firewall and routing
software. Part of that is a DHCP server, and then on each computer on my
network whatever the native DHCP client is, it talks to the server and the
machine is "on the network and internet". Could be your W98 machine does it
too.

OS 8 is kind of buggy, best to right off download the free upgrade to OS 8.1.

A couple good cheap network cards for a Starmax (or a PC) are;

Once the card is installed and its software (I do the software first), open
the control panels, and open TCP/IP. Select ethernet, and Using DHCP
Server, then write the DNS IP addresses in the lower box (you may need to
set (Edit/User Mode) user mode to advanced). Click on the options button
and remove the check from load only when needed. Close the dialog box and
start surfing more or less. When its running OK you should see your LOCAL
not internet IP address in the middle of the control panel.
