Thanks to those who responded to my USB questions.....
The final results are all good.
The Inland card ($15), installed in the fifth pci slot of my SM 4000 tower, worked
immediately after installing the Apple USB updaters,upon restart. Hooked to the card
is a UMAX 3400 flatbed scanner, hummin along just fine.....lookin forward to gettin an
optical mouse, now....
