Dear Bob,
You don't bring up enough personal safety issues when cracking open a
computer. I know that you (and we all) mean well in telling people how to fix
our computers .... certainly this is our only and last place to try and help
ourselves with the StarMax these days. All the same, we send people off on a
crusade that can at the very least harm their computers .... lordy, if they
are lucky then they won't harm themselves.
I know that this isn't like cracking open an all-in-one-Mac; one with a CRT
(a screen). For those of you that don't know why that is sooooooooo bloody
dangerous is that that CRT holds an electrical power almost forever and when
you make contact with it, it will discharge .... sending you some 20 feet
across the room. If you are lucky enough to survive the jolt, you can post
your experience on the internet.
I'm not kidding you about this.
Be careful in what you do .... your computer and sometimes your life depends
on it.
It drives me totally wild when people talk about cracking open a computer
and dicking with stuff with such ease as one removes an item from a freezer.
You aren't working with an appliance when you are dealing a computer. You
need to have the same fear as poking a fork into a toaster .... things will
go bad quickly if you make a wrong connection. For the safety of your
computer and you, you had dang well have the fear of god when you open that
case.
If you don't, then you are just too stupid to live. (I'm really sorry to say
that.)
I've cracked open many computers in my little life time and each .....
EACH.... and every one of them made me sweat bullets. I've worried that I'd
get fried, I've worried that I'd fry a component. I was scared every time
that I opened a computer but I always ----always ----- knew WHY I was scared.
If we are telling people to open their computers then we must, must, must be
responsible in reminding them about every aspect of safety. I don't care if
it is something that we should all know .... there are too many people that
read these posts that didn't see this reminder or that simply don't know.
Simply put, none of us ..... NONE OF US..... can afford forgetting to remind
everyone to be ever so careful about opening that computer case. Don't
believe what I'm saying? Tell me then, how will you defend yourself in a
lawsuit?
Bob, I really like you but you be careful in what you are advising people.
You are now fast becoming a Mac expert and that puts you in a perilous
position. Make certain that you cover your bases with all the personal safety
crap. And Bob shouldn't be the only one concerned about this ----- all of you
that tell someone to try ANYTHING better remember safety first. You owe it
to us to tell us what you know and what you don't know.
I know that this is a pain the butt But think about it ... to save one person
(even from a lawsuit) would be worth this little bit of advice.
Off and running, Linda
I'm so sorry to tell you guys of this. Damn, damn, damn ..... but I've just
got to. I hate this.
Love, Linda
