I've had a problem on my Starmax for over a year. I couldn't find it:
checking extension conflicts, Norton's Disk Doctor, TechTools,
diskfirst aid,(they found tons of faulty bundle bits, dates and even
corrupted resources, fixed them they would appear again) and
reformating and even itializing the drive but keeping a copy of my
valuable files, reinstalled system software, zapped the pram and
rebuilt the desktop, crossed my fingers and yes, i even changed the
battery. it would work fine for a few days and then the symptoms
would come again. I ran various worm and virus progams but nothing
showed up.

a few weeks ago I came across a freeware virus progam called Agax,
downloaded it from Cnet.com and it found hundreds of corrupted
files...sevendust, I believe was the virus name in my case. I'm
clean now and running fine.

perhaps your problems could be corruption due to a virus or worm.
