I suggest you buy at least ONE known good set of parts, then test each
machine with them before spending too much, as its always possible
someplace just junked all the none working machines after stripping parts.

BTW its always a good idea to ask and dig around the thrift shop and make
it clear you will pay a fair price for the missing stuff if they happen to
have it.

My suggestion is to buy a Apple OS 8.6 CD, and Apple bootable CD drive
(even an old 4x) and preferably SCSI, an Apple compatible IDE hard drive,
(3) 32 MB dimms, and a Apple branded keyboard and mouse. Here are all the
whys;
OS 8.6 is a solid newer version that works well on the Starmax without fuss.
An Apple bootable drive removes a LOT of fuss, and SCSI leaves open the
second IDE for another hard drive.
Again a hard drive that can be formatted via Apple Drive Setup, removes fuss.
Lots of people love to fill the starmax with 160 MB of ram, but per MB 32
MB dimms are cheapest (forget 16 MB unless they are close to free).
Non Apple brand keyboards and mice sometimes have problems, you don't need
that in testing.

First choice is to buy stuff from members of this list, we know what works,
and often have extra parts. Email me directly for OS 8.6 CD, or keyboard
and mouse.

Memory is cheap right now, if nobody on the list has a good deal, try OWC
or VelocityUpgrades.
