You would want to boot from a CD if your system crashes and the software
needs to be fixed, or to install new system software. My CD drive (TEac 16x)
went bad and I bought a used Teac 32x cheap and installed it; it was easy-
just take things apart til you get the old one out then reverse the process
with the replacement. I did have an issue that my replacement drive wouldnt
boot up the cds til I trashed the extension's preference file. That would be
the "FWB CD ROM toolkit prefs". I have the Apple CD drive extension off. It
booted up with an iBook OS 9.1 CD fine. You hold down the "c" key on the
keyboard when you start up to do that.

Some say dust inside can cause the cd drive to fail so you might want to try
getting a can of compressed air and blowing in it (or a bicycle pump?)
I got my Starmax fixed about 9 mos ago under warranty when it wouldnt run
any PCI cards. I dont know if they'd cover the CD drive- you could ask- try
Comp USA.
Any CD drive that works w/ one regular cd should work with them all, unless
they're damaged. Some recommend the Matsushita drives which will run well
off the Apple drivers.
