Hi y'all brilliant and friendly StarMaxens: I'm trying to do a whole bunch of things to my Starmax in one fell swoop and am listing here the things to do and the order in which to do them as I see it. I'm hoping that you will take the time to evaluate the list and let me know of any problems you forsee or suggestions to improve/correct the process:
I have a SM4200DT with 144mb RAM, a Maxtor IDE 8.2GB HD, an internal Yamaha 8824e CDRW, and an ethernet PCI card. Externally I have a SCSI CDR, a SCSI scanner, a SCSI Syquest removable hard disk unit and an ethernet Cable Modem. Two printers use the printer and serial ports. I'm using OS 9.1 and plan to stay with it on the new hard disk. I want TO INSTALL internally: NEWER MAXpowr G3-L2 upgrade card, Maxtor 30 GB IDE HD, SIIG UltraATA 133/100 Pro PCI controller board and accompanying software. Note that my OS is from a 9.0 CD with the 9.1 upgrade installer on my current hard disk. Previous experience: I did the install of the 8.2 HD and the ethernet card with no problems and a couple of batteries on my Quadra. I'm hoping to be able to install everything with only one case opening as follows: 01. Install G3 software on old 8.2GB HD. 02. Disconnect everything and take CPU to grounded work bench (no monitor or peripherals there). 03. Open case 04. Install G3 card 05. Install ATA controller board 06. Install 30 GB Maxtor HD to controller board 07. Plug in and push CUDA 08. Unplug and recase 09. Return CPU to computer desk and reconnect everything 10. Startup from old 8.2 HD 11. Initialize and partition new 30 GB HD from driver on old hard disk 12. Install OS9.0 on new hard disk from CD (Question? Do I have to boot from the OSv9.0CD to install it? - I hadn't planned to.) 13. Upgrade new OS 9.0 to OS 9.1 using OS 9.1 upgrade installer on old hard disk 14. Reboot from new 30 GB HD 15. Install G3 software on new HD 16. Install EtherNet driver and all other drivers on new HD 17. Reboot from old HD, which uses Netscape 4.79 to download and install Netscape 6.xx upgrade on new HD. 18. Reboot from new HD and proceed reinstalling software as required As I'm not too sure that I have included all the steps or, in the right order, I would appreciate any and all help. Besides needing the storage space, I've been anxious to do this as my old hard disk has 3 HFS+ volumes and one HSF volume and I want to reinitialize all as HSF+. Also there have been a couple of B-tree errors I've had to live with for a couple of years that couldn't be corrected - I assume I'll now be able to get rid of these. Thanks you hearty intrepid band of bretheren.
