For the Starmax you have to have one that fits in the L2 cache slot and not
all L2 cache processor upgrades will work in the StarMax - it has to be one
for the Tanzania motherboard, which was used in the Apple PowerMac 4400,
7220, and 7600 (the 4400 was the biggest seller of these I think). I think
all hardware is interchangeable between Starmax and these models. I would
search ebay under "Mac 4400 upgrade" or just Mac 4400 and see what you find-
try description search as well as title if title doesn't yield much.
You will possibly need to install drivers which seller ought to
provide. Metabox (joeCARD T and littleJOE T), Sonnet (some Crescendo/L2) and
newertech all made them, only Sonnet still making them that I know of.
The Starmax CANNOT use ZIF or PCI upgrades nor PowerBook.
MacMall.com used to carry the Sonnet 300mhz G3 for SMax for $170 as of last
Septmeber's catalog- you could call them (800-222-2808) or check their
online site, may have some left- their new catalog doesn't list any for
Starmax.
I bought mine from metabox ($100 w/free shipping) just before they
closed their US office. It was pretty easy to install and gave me a G3 260
mhz which is about 50-100% faster than the old 603e. Some software now
requires G3 as you probably know. If you can get one for <$150 or so I think
you will be happy with it- wouldnt spend a lot more than that.
