Ok ... with all of the recent emails that went past about Linux on the
StarMax ... I figured I'd give it a try. However, I have yet to be
successful and figured someone here could shed some light on the subject.
Here is a "log" of what I have tried:

First the setup:
    StarMax 3000/200
Sonnet Crescendo LS G3 upgrade card
    96MB Ram
    1.2GB HDD on IDE0
    Creative CD-RW on IDE1
30GB HDD on IDE1 (of course, MacOS does not see this but Linux does)
    Voodoo 3000 Video
    Asante Fast 10/100 NIC

Mandrake 8.2 PPC:
    - Downloaded the 2 disc ISO images and burned'em
    - Used BootX to run the installer with the 2.4 kernel + tdfk video
    - Also setup 34000 byte Ramdisk with all.gz as the image
    - Linux would not boot under the 2.4 kernel no matter what image/video I
chose
    - Reverted back to using the 2.2 kernel in text mode
    - Finally ... installation began
    - Installed Mandrake and rebooted
    - Used BootX to get into Mandrake using the 2.2 kernel
    - Got all sorts of Modules loading problems because it was using the
wrong path
    - Neither my NIC or video card are nicely supported under the 2.2 kernel
so I decided to give up on Mandrake

I gave up really because I wasn't happy with Mandrake in the first place.

SuSE 7.3 PPC:
    - Install is FTP only (unless I buy it) so I downloaded the install
kernels
    - Kernels were 2.4 so the install would not work
    - Gave up (cause I was already downloading YellowDog at this point)

Yellowdog:
    - Finally, a Linux that would boot with the 2.4 kernel
    - X install came up, but was illegible
    - Tried text mode but the installer crashes when loading the packages
(some Python error)
    - Went to the 2.2 kernel (sigh)
    - Strange, it always switches to my built-in card (probably because the
3dfx is not supported?)
    - Finally ... the installer seems to be working (in text mode only)
    - Got like 80% through the install and the Mac froze up (argh)

I am going to give YellowDog another try and hope it doesn't lock up.
However, does anyone have any pointers that can help me get this going a
little smoother?

Thanks,
Jason
