A couple of things come to mind.   First, is your HDD formatted as 
HFS+ aka 'Mac OS Extended' in the Get Info box for the HD.  The other 
thing, is that try booting with extensions off after first installing 
9.1 then turn OFF Virtual Memory.   I had similar problems until I 
did this.
