i have a Yamaha CRW8824SX external SCSI burner (8x/8x/24x), which i've had for almost two years now. Works well with my StarMax 3000/180MT (which is more or less stock, with upgraded memory and a new hard drive). i get a lot less less overrrun errors burning at 4x though, but that could probably be fixed with some upgrades (or just a new computer). But, for my purposes it works fine. i'd heard quite a bit about Yamaha burners being good in general, which why i went with it (well, that and the fact that the price was quite reasonable). i'm sure the ones they have out now are faster.
