Either way will work, but the quickest way is to copy one disk to another. That way, you've got a backup of everything on your "old" hard drive. You might even want to partition your "new" disk into two or more partitions, depending on its size, for this purpose and others. If you do, then you can designate your new backup volume as the startup disk, if things go awry later.
Make sure you run a virus utility (Virex recommended) and a disk defragmenter and "doctor" utility (Norton or Disk Warrior; Disk Warrior probably the best) to make sure you've got no viruses and that your files/OS, etc. are taking up minimum space and have no problems before you copy everything. Once you have your original files backed up, then you can decide whether you want to do a clean install of everything (recommended, especially the OS), and choose the drive/partition you want to put it on. I just did all this on my 5500/200 when I added a 10 GB 7200 Maxtor drive in a removable insert. You'll find that there's nothing quite as satisfying as knowing you've got a clean, fresh install of your OS, and that you haven't unknowingly copied bad/corrupted/problem files. You'll also find that, assuming your files get a clean bill of health from your utility, it saves a lot of time to just copy them, whether folder by folder or all at once. It may be necessary to reinstall some programs, especially if dragging and dropping extensions from your old system folder into your new one doesn't work. On the other hand, if your present OS and other software works just peachy keen, then just copy everything to your new hard drive in a drag and drop mode. Now I want to free up space on the hard drive with the system software so that it can run better. What is the best way to transfer the files from one HD to another. Should I just copy them over or reinstall apps on the new HD and trash the old stuff. > > -- StarMax is sponsored by <http://lowendmac.com/> and... / Buy books, CDs, videos, and more from Amazon.com \ / <http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/redirect-home/lowendmac> \ Support Low End Mac <http://lowendmac.com/lists/support.html> StarMax list info: <http://lowendmac.com/lists/starmax.html> --> AOL users, remove "mailto:" Send list messages to: <mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]> To unsubscribe, email: <mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]> For digest mode, email: <mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Subscription questions: <mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Archive: <http://www.mail-archive.com/starmax%40mail.maclaunch.com/> Using a Mac?
