Any clues where I might look for a problem? Any solutions floating around?
It is probably little consolation, but I have a StarMax on my home network and it plays fine with all the other machines there (TiBook, iMac, Mac II, and even a MacPlus). I recently backed up some files to a CD via my TiBook, about 80MB, from the Max and had no problems.
If I had to make a guess, I would suspect a loose connection/wire/board somewhere. You might try reseating, replugging etc to make sure you have a good contacts. In fact, if you can, try swapping the lines from one computer to another to see if the problem is with the line or the Max's hardware. Cables DO go bad from time to time. If you've swapped the lines and the problem persists with the Max, then perhaps the NIC itself is going.
