This is a frequent complaint.
1st, how much RAM do you have in it? if you're running OS9 you should
max the ram preferably (two 64mb and one 32mb chip=160). With OS 8, 96 is
probably adequate but I would still do the max. And turn off virtual memory
if this is on in the memory control panel- that will slow things a lot.
Go under the memory control panel and set it so that it doesn't check
the ram every time it starts up, which is the default setting. I think you
hold down the option key- forget the combination.
You could have a hard drive problem but if there are no other problems
except slow, probably not. A large hard drive will take longer to find
things- have you put in a big one (>20gb)?
Be aware these old 603 processors just don't have the speed you get from a
G3 or Pentium 4. A G3 accelerator processor chip can be added in the L2
cache slot but I wouldn't advise you spend a lot on one for these when you
can get a used 233 mhz G3 Beige these days for about $100 + shipping w/ a
faster bus speed and more RAM capacity too, & ability to increase the
processor speed to 400mhz or so fairly cheaply. These SM are still good
computers for some things though- mine burns CDs great and fine for email
and word processing.
