The power supply IS most assuredly damaged to the point that it's replacement is a must. After surviving a power surge, it blew it's 110/220V selector switch clean off the rear of the power supply.
Physical damage that will eclipse anything helpful that would come from
checking the battery and pressing the cuda.
Its still been unplugged now for many days, so chances are VERY good the battery has dropped down to the replacement range. Once you find a replacement power supply it would be smart to have a new battery on hand too.
BTW The FAQ needs an update, after years of suppling batteries, I am all out with no expectation of getting more.

The battery deterioration is independent of of the power circuit. Being unplugged doesn't mean the battery voltage drops down; it probably had been sour for some time and the 5V from the supply masked the condition. With that supply gone, the PRAM instructions then get garbled.
Assumedly, a Max can be unplugged for the remaining shelf life of its battery and still keep up the PRAM values.
More importantly, if switches are flying off machines, will California require safety goggles during computer use?
