Installing 8.5/6 on Starmax 3000/180

I have been searching for the answer to this, and it seems that someone 
here probably knows the answer. I have a stock Starmax 3000 w/16mb of RAM, 
1.1GB HD.  It crashed recently, corrupting the system, and would not boot. 
I was able to clean install a stock 8.1 installation without too many 
problems, except I can't seem to get ethernet working again.

I think ethernet worked when I was using OpenTransport 2.0, is there an 
easy way to upgrade the machine to 8.6? Will 8.6 run in 16 MB of RAM?

All I want to do with the machine is to be able to run IE, Microsoft Word, 
and OT/PPP.
