I have friends who collect old computers, ie mini computers, vax, dec, Data General, and cheaper shipping is available, but don't expect most sellers to be willing to do it for you. One company is Forward Air, basically you drop off a palleted item at their airport location and have a truck to pick up the pallet at the airport destination, and several hundred pounds of goods can be shipped across the country for less than a $100.

For smaller items the best you can hope for is a local sale, or the buddy system, ie your buddy who lives near the seller picks up the item, and brings it in car on next visit to his mom who lives near enough for you to drive by and pick it up.

OTOH $25 shipping to your door is pretty reasonable.

Some sellers still insist on the buyer paying the full rate of places like Mail Box etc. who charge a bunch to pack and then still tack on a surcharge to the UPS rates etc.
