David's needs are different to your questions. To edit or add audio
to a movie, you only need QuickTime Pro installed, and then edit away
inside QuickTime Player.

To do most of what David wants, you could use HyperCard. It's Mac
only, but that's what he has. You can have text fields, color
graphics, QuickTime movies, sounds, etc. The main downside is that
it's not currently under future development, so you would buy it for
$99 and probably be stuck at the current version.

I said it would do most of what's needed. The little thing that makes
it all a lot harder is placing graphics on top of the movie. To do
that you would need a video editing tool like Final Cut Pro, or Adobe
Premiere. With those you can have multiple video and graphics layers,
create the presentation you want, and then render that out to a new
QuickTime movie to use inside HyperCard, or if you have included
everything you may have a movie that would be self sufficient and
would work inside any program that plays QuickTime.

Another approach would be to take the QuickTime movie and use it
inside Macromedia Director. In Director you can set the movie up so
that it's possible to layer graphics on top of it. Doing that affects
the performance of the playback, but if you are using a fast machine
you should be ok.

If you can get the educational version of Director the price isn't
too bad (can't remember how much exactly, but a lot cheaper than the
full professional price). Director can do everything you have asked
to do, and it's cross platform.
