(Crossposted to statusnet-dev and statusnet-i18n)

It seems that there've been some issues lately with keeping StatusNet's localizations functional and up to date... that's something I'd love to help change if I can!

There's an existing online editing setup using Pootle at http://status.net/pootle/ but my impression is that either folks haven't been terribly fond of using it or it's just not being maintained well and the updates aren't getting committed back to git.

Is Pootle good enough as an interface that we just need to jumpstart maintenance on it, or would there be interest in migrating to TranslateWiki?

TranslateWiki (http://translatewiki.net/) was originally built as a central workspace for folks updating localizations for MediaWiki, but has grown to support other free software projects using a number of different l10n backends, including gettext. The TW folks are keen to bring more projects on board, with the aim of building a larger pool of translators than most small projects can attract on their own.

The main disadvantage of TranslateWiki at the moment is that the interface is a little cluttered and some actions run a bit sluggish (both problems which can be improved with a little effort & coordination w/ the TW maintainers). Pootle's got a cleaner UI for now, but it won't help outside translators discover our project.
