Informal is my vote. It's pretty much expected that 'social media'
(sorry, I can't write it without the quotes) is informal in style.

On the other points:
1. Clearer for non-native speakers? - that's why we have translations
2. Easier to translate consistently? - hopefully translators can
understand the source language
