Is there some way we can revise helfire's work to be acceptable?
I have two concerns about Eric's change.

   * The install screen is the wrong place to put it. We want the
install to be as minimal as possible, and I don't think this
     setting is appropriate there.
   * I would like this data collection to be on by default so we get
     more data.

The original intention was that this data was to be available to everyone; we've done a bad job publishing the data up until now. Nate, please make sure that the data from the stats collection app is available for download ASAP.

From my point of view, the value of this data is for development. It helps a lot to know how many sites are out there, what versions of the software they're running, and what kind of platform they're running on. Clearly, the more data we get, the better.

Here's how I'd like to see this problem solved:

   * Data collection on by default.
   * Data goes to status.net and is available freely (CC0) to everyone
     to download.
   * Prominent switch to turn off data collection in the admin panel.
   * Data collection automatically off for sites marked 'private'.
(This is the way it already works.)
   * Data collection automatically off for sites on "internal" network
addresses (10.*, 192.168.*, etc.) This should catch most
     public-but-firewalled instances.

Let me know if that's acceptable to you.
