For me the capability to manage your privacy is not an extra thing. It can't be. I have checked the geolocation feature from the third location I use to stay (with FireFox 3.0.16 over Ubuntu with and without Google Gears) and it works as spected (Vitoria with Google Gears and another place at 140 Km from me without Google Gears). I comment this just to confirm what you already know, that Google Gears works with FF 3.0.
