So, any one of these is interesting, and I'd love to see them done right for the summer.

I'm uninterested in the multi-protocol libraries; I don't see the value for our project.

is_local etc. it is sent to this daemon, which then matches its
conents against the inverted index file, the daemon then sends any
matches to a plugin hook say, RealtimeSeachHit.
When I've talked to people about real-time search, they call this "the dumb way to do it."

This is an extremely advanced project to do -- I'd expect a graduate student. It will require considerable research into the state-of-the-art of real-time search.
3. Twitter Lists!

This is one of the easy ones!
This would be a good one to take on, especially given your experience with our software. I don't like your design, but we can discuss that further.
I think this idea is the most intriguing of all, mainly because I
know little about search engines.
It would basically be taking our people search code from StatusNet and expanding it so it could be used for many many sites.

Anyways: in general, I'd be happy if you took on the Twitter lists or one of the IM plugins; less happy about the search stuff.
