Hi guys,

I'm interested in the topic of People and Group Recommendations. Before I
give the final proposal, I'd like to show my idea here to see if it works.

For any SNS, cold-start is a tricky problem. When a user has few friends,
how do we offer him/her some good choices? 1) If the user is more for
business, other users in the same university or in the same major should be
recommended; 2) if the user is more for amusement, other users sharing
similar interests (music genre, sports type) should be recommended. So I
believe the recommendation is composed of two parts, and both are important.
I mean the two types of recommendation is similarly important for users,
since everyone is both for business and for amusement (in different
periods). This is the fundamental of my idea. Because I'm a CS graduate and
my research interest is Recommender Systems, there're several algorithms to
implement my idea. One type is based on the network connection and the other
is semantics. In this step, a recommendation minipage is to be made.

I just talked about the strategy of recommendation. Timing is another issue.
The best opportunity to make recommendation for new comers is when their
first log in, but that's not enough. Every time they give another login is
another chance to recommend. So the user home page is to be modified for
this use.

To sum up, my proposal includes two features: 1)recommendation minipage and
2)recommendation list on home page. And other features are on the fly.

Good beginning is half success. If cold-start is no more a question for
OStatus, we can foresee the huge success of StatusNet.
