Friends and fellow developers,
The CSS and image files, copyright StatusNet Inc., in the /theme/
sub-directory were formerly licensed under the AGPL v3.
I've relicensed them under a much more permissive Creative Commons
Attribution 3.0 Unported license.
I've also made a note that "we" believe that themes aren't subject to
the AGPLv3's copyleft provisions, similar to how the SFLC opined about
WordPress, here:
http://wordpress.org/news/2009/07/themes-are-gpl-too/
"the PHP files are subject to the requirements of the GPL while
the images and CSS are not."
Note that unlike WordPress themes, StatusNet themes do not include PHP
code.
This change should make it easier for organizations to deploy StatusNet
sites with their own themes. Many organizations will want to use images
and CSS to match other parts of their Web sites; re-licensing those
files (like the organization's logo) might be onerous or difficult.
It's important to me that users have freedom when using StatusNet sites,
but this change seems like a reasonable compromise between developers'
and users' freedoms.
Before we release this version, I'd like to get feedback from other
contributors that this change reflects your wishes for StatusNet, too.
-Evan
