I recently had a virus problem. When I was searching for Los Angeles
Maps, using Google Search, a pop window appeared. My Firefox is
supposed to block such pop up windows. Anyway, at first a pop window
appeared saying my computer is infected. I tried to close it. It won't
close. Soon another pop up window appeared asking me to click on "I
accept". This window also won't allow me to close it. I used Window
Task Manger to close it. It still reappeared and I used the task
manager again. Meanwhile the damage has been done. Also I could not
close the first window. I found out that window became a part of my
screen saver. I also found, the virus eliminated 'the screen saver &
settings' tab from my 'Display Properties' of the monitor. I got the
help to recreate my old screen saver from a friend. I also got back
the above menu options.

The virus created the following problems:

Windows XP problem
If there is no activity, the window started shutting down saying "A
problem has been detected and windows has shut down to prevent further
damage". Then it will start again and shuts itself down. This back
and forth process continues until, I shut the power off and restart
the computer. If I do not turn off the computer, the same problem of
shutting down, restarting, shutting down continues. I used AVG and
luckily it eliminated this problem, probably by replacing the virus
affected window files

Problems when I use the Browsers
The AVG anti virus could not eliminate the following problems with the
browsers that I encountered after the virus attack. I haven't found a
way to eliminate it. I hope somebody can suggest me a way to
eliminate it.

The first is sites being redirected. If I type in say Air Canada in
Google, Air Canada
web site is one of the many that gets listed. However, once I click
Air
Canada in Google, it takes me to other websites. Same thing happened
when I
typed in Avg in Google and when I clicked on AVG link, it took me a
to
different site. It happens with both Firefox & Internet Explorer (IE).
In each case, it is being redirected to different sites

Another problem is if I type in a url like AVG.com, I get a message
"Failed to
connect" or 'No address found". This happens both with Firefox and
IE. For IE, the message window says "This page cannot be displayed"
That means when I type the site address using keypad, there is
problem. If I click on a site from bookmark, this does not happen.
This means I can only go to sites that have been bookmarked already.
Also sometimes I see a mesage - 'Connection is interrupted. The
connection to the server was reset while page loading. already
bookmarked'

Also I noticed it is taking longer time to download a web site.
Another problem that I encountered is "content encoding error" . This
happens when I go to a bookmarked site and make selections. Once
clicked the selections, the site is supposed to send me info based on
my selection. Instead I get the encoding error.

My questions is - Is there anyway to correct the above problems
without reformatting it.
Any help would be greatly appreciated
