"The plan should also show that the country will have
enough money not only for the purchase of new planes
but also for the modernization of other parts of the
army." Any idea of what the per capita income of
Slovakia is? How many families could be fed, clothed
and housed for the price of a US-manufactured war
plane?

NATO Official Praises Slovak Plan of Building of Armed
Forces
BRATISLAVA, Jun 1, 2001 -- (CTK - Czech News Agency)
Allied Air Forces Northern Europe Commander General
Gregory Martin praised today in Bratislava a plan of
the building of the Slovak armed forces until 2010,
being prepared by the Slovak Defense Ministry.
He said that it was an excellent project which was
proceeding forward very successfully and which offered
certain alternatives and possibilities for the
orientation of the Slovak armed forces. The plan
testifies to Slovakia's great effort to harmonize the
development in the defense area with NATO needs,
Martin told journalists after talks with chief of the
Slovak Army general staff Milan Cerovsky and Defense
Ministry State Secretary Rastislav Kacer today. The
prepared plan will also concern the Slovak air force.
The Slovak National Defense Council did not made a
decision in March on a concrete form of the renewal of
the Slovak out-dated air force. The council only took
note of a Defense Ministry plan for the purchase of
multi-purpose subsonic fighter planes and said that
the definitive decision would be made in November when
the plan of the development of the whole army was
approved.
The plan should also show that the country will have
enough money not only for the purchase of new planes
but also for the modernization of other parts of the
army. Premier Mikulas Dzurinda said earlier that "it
seemed that Slovakia would take the path of using
subsonic fighters."
A study by Pentagon experts led by General Joseph
Garrett, drafted last year, questioned the plan of the
purchase of subsonic fighters and recommended that
Bratislava postpone purchases of weapons until the
year 2010.
