A majority of Berliners think former communists can govern. BERLIN -- A majority of Berliners think the former communists in the PDS party are capable of governing the capital, according to a public opinion poll published Tuesday in the Die Woche weekly magazine and the Berliner Morgenpost newspaper. The Forsa poll showed that 52 percent of Berliners think the former communists are competent to run Berlin. A total of 37 percent said the former communists should not govern. The ruling coalition of Christian Democratic Union (CDU) mayor Eberhard Diepgen has fallen and the Social Democrats (SPD) have said they will form a ruling coalition with the ecologist Greens and the PDS (the Party of Democratic Socialism). This has brought an outcry from conservative circles about the former communists returning to power, 12 years after the fall of the Berlin Wall and 40 years after the Wall was built by the former East German communist regime.
