New York Times. 17 June 2001. Milosevic Foe Is Accused of Corruption.
Excerpts.

BELGRADE -- Six months after he made his move to seek independence for
Montenegro, the republic's president, Milo Djukanovic, is looking
increasingly embattled, with his effort to break away from Serbia
failing and his personal standing under attack.

The man once championed by the West for standing up to Slobodan
Milosevic is now accused of being a corrupt and ruthless politician,
threatening his political future.

Mr. Djukanovic is coming under attack from the regional news media for
suspected links with mobsters and long-rumored involvement in
large-scale cigarette smuggling.

Articles in an investigative weekly, Nacional, published in neighboring
Croatia, have accused Mr. Djukanovic of amassing $65 million from
cigarette smuggling through Montenegro over the last decade and of
ordering contract killings of associates who might know too much.

Once an ally of Mr. Milosevic, Mr. Djukanovic adroitly switched sides in
1997 when he sensed the tide turning against the former Yugoslav
president.
