More Romanian Workers Join Hunger Strike Over Closed
Steel Plant

BUCHAREST, Jun 26, 2001 -- (dpa) The number of workers
on hunger strike in the southwestern Romanian steel
works Resita to underpin demands for a resumption of
production at the plant rose to 260 Tuesday, national
radio reported.

About 2,000 workers meanwhile staged a protest outside
the former state-owned plant which was privatized
eight months ago, demanding that the government use
its influence to ensure that they are paid outstanding
wages and that work at the plant resumes.

Production at the factory has been halted since it was
sold to the U.S. firm Noble Ventures.

The hunger strikers began their action last Thursday.

The workers, among them trade union representatives
from three other steel works, chanted slogans against
the government and the new owners Noble Ventures.

Among them was the radical trade union leader from the
nearby Shil Valley coal mining region, Romeo Beja, who
played a key role in miners unrest in the winter of
1999.

The government has repeatedly said that it could not
interfere in a conflict between a private enterprise
and the workforce.
