first thing before loading any new modules would be to update the
distro(I don;t know if the CD form mabazine contains the bug fixes).
As root
apt-get update
apt-get dist-upgrade

Next

modconf

look for the needed module,if you don't see it you need a recompile.
next you need to configure the mixerdevice

apt-get install gom

You will need to have access to Debian sources and you can use the Storm
Package Manager as an alternative.


As for the Conexant stuff that's a winmodem,most of Conexant's are using
Rockwell chips so don;t know if that's supported,maybe a look a 
http://www.linmodems.org would help more but I won't hold my breath for
it.
