Hi ya,
I think that what you are trying to do is possible and is certainly one of
the great features in Linux in general. I would try the following things:
Install the least amount of storm components. Steer away from installing X.
Run the text install option and get a working set-up happening. After that
use apt get to install individual packages.
Low end machines certainly have a lot of life left in them with a Linux
distro install. They have maximum benefit when they also have a NIC
installed and are connected to a network
