The driver was compiled with modversions, I think. If your kernel does not
have the MODVERSIONS switch on, the OS cannot do the force insmod
successfully. When you recompile your new kernel you will first need to
reconfigure. One of the early options in the reconfiguration deals with
MODVERSIONS.
If you are recompiling your existing kernel, do a
mv /lib/modules/2.2.14 /lib/modules/2.2.14.old
just before the 'make modules_install'
done as the very last thing. Some HOWTO's miss that.If you're doing a
kernel new to your machine, this is not a problem.
