You're still booting from the kernel on the CDROM, then.
You need to install and configure LILO (or as an alternative, CHOS,
which is much better than LILO), tell LILO and CHOS where your
new kernel is (be sure to leave your old kernel as a boot option,
though, because the kernels of first-timers have a tendency not to
boot -- mine first kernel did, though.... after 2 hours, because
it was about 5MB in size. ah well, you live and learn), and then
actually run LILO or CHOS to install the boot loader once you have
one of them configured.
