Well, let's say a healthy installation has 700MB worth of packages
installed (that's around 1.5GB uncompressed, which is a bit on
the excessive side, but not unreasonable). Most packages will be
replaced during a dist-upgrade, and thinking realistically and
considering that you'll be getting at most 10MB/hour on that connection
of yours... yikes. Well, it can download in the background while
you play xkoules and stuff... that's what I did.

Of course, you probably have considerably fewer packages than that
installed. And there's certainly no problem with letting packages
download in the problem over the course of, say, a couple weeks.

In terms of Debian mirrors: give ftp.eecs.umich.edu/debian a try.
I've found it to be not only the fastest of all the servers I've
tried, but also the most reliable. The main Debian FTP site,
while fast, tends to be a bit erratic in terms of throughput, but
the University of Michigan server has always done a great job for
me, even though I'm not geographically close to it.

If you want a copy of my sources.list file (affectionately known as
THE ULTIMATE SOURCES.LIST), which will increase the size of your
package list to over 5850 packages, you can find it here:

Enjoy!
